black-capped night heron thumb The Black-Capped Heron was completed on 4/6/2009. These gorgeous birds are always fun to see. When I first moved out to the Bay Area from Minneapolis I saw some at a great distance and wondered what they were as they are not native to Minnesota. Now I often see them around Lake Merritt on Oakland and, if I'm lucky, sometimes I get to see them snap up a small fish.

Information about the Black-Capped Night Heron:

The Black-Capped or Black Crowned Night Heron is native to areas across the parts of North America from Washington to Quebec and southwards into coastal Mexico, Central America and Costa Rica. They generally inhabit large wetlands, swamps, streams, marshes and lakeshores. They are tolerant of humans and are often found in urban areas besides lakes and in open fields. They are stocky birds about 23-26 inches tall with a wingspan of roughly 45 inches. Like other shorebirds they feed on amphibians, lizards, fish, rodents, carrion and plant materials.
