It seems whenever I do a batch of animals, there has to be at least one. I suppose I like them so much as they're often encountered on my hikes. The avocet is pretty common in the Bay area marshes, and I really like the coloring too. The drawing is based on a photo by Bill Bouton.
| Information about the American Avocet:The American Avocet is a large, long-legged wader or shorebird found throughout much of North America (mostly in western parts) down through Mexico where they winter. It has a very distinctive bill which is upturned. They are in the same birds family as stilts. Avocets prefer shallow fresh, saline or brackish ponds, beaches, mud flats and marshes where they forage for small crustaceans, insects and occasionally small fish and vegetable matter.
