These funny looking guys are pretty common in Central and South America, but when I was in Costa Rica I needed a stray dog that had started to follow me while hiking to point one out (by chasing it but of course the coati was too fast and wily to get caught. The drawing is based on a photo by Olrik.
| Information about the White-Nosed Coati:The White-Nosed Coati - also called the Coatmundi, Pizote or Antoon - is a member of the raccoon family. They inhabit wooded areas of the Americas, from southeastern Arizona and New Mexico in the north down into Columbia in the south. They are opportunistic, omnivorous eaters and will feed on small vertebrates as well as fruit, eggs, carrion and insects. They are excellent climbers and will head for the trees if they sense danger. Otherwise, they're generally found on the forest floor foraging around for food. Like their raccoon relatives, they will eagerly raid campsites and garbage cans. They are easily domesticated and will even beg for food from humans. While their numbers have decreased due to habitat loss they are not considered endangered. FREE SHIPPING IN THE US! |
