Artist's notes:

red or gray wolf thumb The Red Wolf was completed on 11.14.09. After seeing a Gray Wolf in a forest in northern Minnesota about 12 years ago wolves have had a special place in my heart. Shortly before drawing this I saw a documentary on Red Wolves and the attempts in some areas of the US to reintroduce these wonderful animals back into the wild. The drawing is based on a photo by Valerie Abbott.

Information about the Red Wolf:

The Red Wolf is a North American canid. These animals once roamed throughout the southeastern United States. Before hunting, loss of habitat and control programs drove the Red Wolf to the brink of extinction habitats included forests, swamps and coastal prairies. It was the apex predator of it's ecosystem. The Red Wolf is considered critically endangered, as attempts were made to exterminate this species as the US was populated. But now there are intensive efforts to reintroduce them back into the wild in North Carolina.
