| This illustration is also available as stock art. | Artist's notes: I love the praying mantis. I've only encountered a few in the wild, but each time it has been memorable. This drawing, as some may realize, is based upon a fairly well-known photo. Generally I try to avoid this but as the image is pretty strong I have no immediate plans to re-create it.
| Information about the Praying Mantis:Praying Mantis grow to be about 3 inches with a large head and abdomen. They have a pair of large forelegs that are serrated and spiny and folded back like a pocket knife. They hold their forelegs up in a praying position to grab prey. Adult males are smaller and more slender than females, and have longer wings. Praying mantids are highly predacious and feed on a variety of insects. They are the only insect that can turn it's head.
