Artist's notes:
The
original drawing of this scorpion was completed in 2003
and the color added in 2007. Scorpions are very cool arachnids
and I always enjoy illustrating them. When I'm in the desert
I'm always looking for them under rocks, but generally I
seem to not have very good luck. I think the pose of this
illustration captures the fierceness of the scorpion nicely.

Information about the Giant Desert Hairy
Scorpion:
The Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion lives in the the southwestern
US and northern Mexico and is the largest scorpion in that
area. They can grow to a length of over six inches long.
It is native to the Sonoran and Mojave deserts. The scorpion
is large enough that is can feed on prey as large as lizards
and snakes. They are poisonous, but are not considered deadly
to humans. Their sting is comparable to a bee's, but as
with bees if the victim is allergic it can be fatal.
